Anatomy of a Murder
1959 – 2 hr 40 min – USA – b/w – 35mm
d: Otto Preminger
County: Nov 9 (Mon 7:30)
Ambler: Nov 11 (Wed 7:30)
One of the best courtroom dramas ever. Jimmy
Stewart is a small town Michigan lawyer who
defends a soldier charged with murdering a
man who allegedly raped his wife. But the
truth is murky in this noirish drama that has
the powerful immediacy of live footage. With a
beautifully brash score by Duke Ellington (who
also has a wonderful cameo) and with great
performances from Ben Gazzara, George C.
Scott, and Lee Remick.
Bird
1988 – 2 hr 41 min – USA – color – digital
d: Clint Eastwood
County: Nov 16 (Mon 7:30)
Ambler: Nov 18 (Wed 7:30)
Forest Whitaker stars as Charlie ‘Bird’ Parker,
one of the greats of jazz: a creator of bebop
and a saxophone innovator with an immediately
distinctive sound. Clint Eastwood’s love for jazz
is clearly reflected in this portrayal of Parker’s
brilliant, but tragic life. Featuring a unique
soundtrack with actual Parker recordings
digitally cleaned and recombined with
contemporary sidemen.
Elevator to the Gallows
1958 – 1 hr 28 min – France – b/w– 35mm - w/subtitles
d: Louis Malle
County: Nov 23 (Mon 7:30)
Ambler: Nov 25 (Wed 7:30)
Louis Malle’s first film is wonderfully alive as it
mixes film noir with new wave sensibility. When
a woman and her lover conspire to murder her
husband, their destinies are put in motion.
Featuring an amazing, improvised score by
Miles Davis, this classic film also has beautiful
black and white cinematography.
