One of Fellini’s best, LA STRADA features the inimitable Giulietta Masina, who frequently starred in his films. Here she delivers a heartwrenching performance playing a simple young woman who is “sold” to a traveling carnival’s brutish strongman (Anthony Quinn). Touchingly tender and unflinchingly real, this gem is “pure Fellini.” (Shown in HD digital as part of Janus Films’ approved “Essential Art House in HD” .)

This was the first film adaptation of Shaw’s play about a cockney flower-girl who is transformed into a “lady” under the guidance of a stuffy professor. The script was aided by Shaw, himself, and it retains all of the key lines while giving the whole affair a fresh re-working. Leslie Howard and Wendy Hiller are superb in the leads in this smartly produced film.

A nuanced film with finally observed characters, this is surely a masterpiece of world cinema.
