2011 Best Of Lists

There are still 2011 movies that have not made their way to the Ambler or County yet. But, with Award season in full swing, it is hard not to think back over the year and start comparing notes.

What were your favorite films of 2011? Post your list in the comments section below. Feel free to add your top five worst films if you like. We would love to know those as well. In case you forgot the movies that came out this year, here is the complete list of films released in 2011.

We will keep this post open until the end of the month, and then will condense all of the lists into one master Top Ten.

Despicable Me

The Ambler Theater and The Ambler Area YMCA are coming together for another morning of fun and community support. The morning will feature a screening of Despicable Me, the animated tale of a criminal mastermind who uses a trio of orphan girls as pawns for a grand scheme, but finds their love is profoundly changing him for the better.

Bring a donation of a canned good, a winter hat, or gloves/mittens and get a free popcorn. Donations support the Ambler Food Cupboard.

Proceeds from the screening support the YMCA’s Strong Kids Campaign, which makes the Ambler Area Y accessible to all people and helps to empower the community to learn, grow and thrive.

Admission:
$4.50 individual
$10 for the whole family

We Are Half Way There!

Thank you so much for all of your support in our Digital Cinema Challenge. We are happy to announce that we have crossed the half-way point in fundraising at both the County and Ambler Theaters. Thank you for your outpouring of contributions, suggestions, and enthusiasm.

We still have work to do, but we are well on our way to making Digital Cinema a reality at both theaters. Let’s talk now about our fundraising plans and our research into the type of Digital Cinema projectors we are looking into purchasing:

3 Reasons to See a Movie over New Year’s Weekend

fireworks1) Special New Year’s Weekend Schedule

We have adjusted our showtimes on New Year’s Eve so you can be out before midnight. All shows on Sat, Dec 31st have been moved one hour earlier. We have also added extra shows on New Year’s Day and on Monday’s legal holiday.

2) Award-Nominated Films

We have incredible movies playing this weekend: THE ARTIST, YOUNG ADULT, and THE DESCENDANTS. All three films are garnering awards buzz and critical acclaim. Make sure to catch them soon, they will not be on-screen for that much longer. (The Artist will be opening at the County on Jan 20th.)

3) Your New Year’s resolution is to spend more time at your local theater, right?

Well, it should be. 2012 is shaping up to be a great year – full of films and events you are not going to want to miss.

There are a number of other main attractions on the horizon. Next in line are THE IRON LADY, A DANGEROUS METHOD, CARNAGE, and TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPY.

We also have another incredible season of live plays, ballets, and theater from Europe’s top venues. Ambler’s season starts in January with CENDRILLON featuring soprano Joyce DiDonato. The County’s show will be in February with the live broadcast of TRAVELING LIGHT from London’s National Theatre. The full Lively Arts Season schedule and tickets are now available.

Satellite glitches interrupt Don Giovanni simulcast; Will be corrected for encore

Despite technical glitches in the simulcast of La Scala's new Don Giovanni, sound was restored in time for the Don's toast: "Viva la libertà!"

Along with the spectacle and sonic wonder of Wednesday’s live simulcast of La Scala’s new production of Don Giovanni were reminders that international satellite broadcasts are not yet perfect. It first became obvious during the live shots of the hall, slowly filling with a tuxedo-and-gowned mass of Italy’s elite. About every five minutes, the sound would suddenly cut out, for a fraction of a second, and then return. But RAI, the Italian broadcast company in charge of capturing the event, was also testing camera focus, the subtitles, and the microphones, so it was assumed, at least by me, that the sound glitch was simply part of the tests.

Los Angeles on Film: An Introduction to L.A. Confidential

Hi. I’m Shane Jenkins, one of the managers of the Ambler Theater. I also have a film degree from Temple University. “But what makes you qualified to talk about Los Angeles in film?” you say. I’m glad I asked that question on your behalf. I lived in L.A. for a year in the 90s, and I am in no way saying that makes me an expert on the city. Unless we are talking about where in L.A. the Western Unions are so people could wire me money so I could buy ramen noodles. In that case, I AM an expert.
