Bad Lieutenant

Bad Lieutenant – USA – 2 hr 1 min – Werner Herzog

Subtitled “Port of Call New Orleans,” this remake is the twisted tale of a good cop gone bad. Nicolas Cage throws himself into an “enthusiastic” performance and master director Herzog puts his unpredictable spin on the action. Is it an artistically-sophisticated social commentary or a tawdry B film? Or both? In any event, it’s pure unmitigated cinema an awesome guilty pleasure.

Cage can NOT pull it off. He’s not that great of a actor.

Actually he( Cage) is an excellent actor, just been in some pretty bad, ( awful) films .I can’t even remember the names….
Last art film was movie w. Him & Cher..( Moonlight..)Did you even see the film??

Would you count Adaptation as an art film – because I think Cage is brilliant in it.

The film was “Moonstruck” and it WAS a classic. I put Cage and Sandra Bullock in the same category but I don’t believe Bullock was ever in anything as good as Moonstruck.

The Bad Lieutenant will be opening this Friday, December 4th at the Ambler Theater. (I would be very interested to hear you comments after viewing the film!)

Moonstruck was amazing. I love when Cher slaps Cage and say “SNAP OUT OF IT”! I have to agree I gag when I have to watch a Cage film. However, he was excellent in Adaptation… that is about it for me as far as “good” Cage films. He is just another example “who you know” or in his case who is your family member. There are so many talented people out there but because you know someone you get to be famous… what a waste. Herzog is great so I guess I will have to give this film a chance and see what happens! Go FRIDAY!

I think Nic Cage is one of those actors that can be decent if he has a director that will reign in his scenery-chewing tendencies. This goes for Jim Carrey too (with Truman Show and its director Peter Weir, for instance). Most directors, though, just let them do whatever they want, and neither of them has a good sense of when they have gone too far.

OK. I’m going to give you the straight deal. Nick Cage is an awesome actor and this is a stunningly fine performance. Yes, that’s right. Cue the music, it’s Oscar time. Herr Herzog totally brings out what Cage does best – his deep, selfless commitment and enthusiasm. Cage takes over a movie and takes it to another level. He is both inside AND outside this role – pure postmodernism. But with no irony – Herzog doesn’t do irony. He’s not fooling around – he goes straight to the heart of darkness. It’s like opera: over the top and beautiful. Herzog has been looking for an actor like Cage for decades and now he’s found his new Klaus Kinski. Bravo, gentlemen!
And for those of you who doubt Mr Cage, how about: Adaptation, Raising Arizona, Red Rock West, Vampire’s Kiss, AND, AND National Treasure. That is an incredibly fine list. And now Bad Lieutenant? Wow.
My recommendation? GO SEE THIS MOVIE!!!!

How about Leaving Las Vegas? He was awesome in that – what a heartbreaking movie. But yeah he needs a better agent or something.

After watching Nicholas Cage do drugs for an hour, I left the theater. I wanted to ask for my money back.

As avid movie goers and members of the County Theater family, we are not necessarily fans of Nicholas Cage. I loved him in “Moonstruck” and can tolerate him in his recent walk-through parts [ie. National Treas.], but this movie called for some real acting.
“Bad Lt.” wound its way downward in a regular film noir fashion, but took a dazzling swoop upward at the end. The drug ingesting Cage character was convincing; the pain registering in his eyes and bearing in every scene of the film. He was not an endearing character, true ;and perhaps that is why he is being bashed in the above comments. We felt his acting was extra-ordinary in this piece and loved the cast as well. A hot time in The Port of Call,New Orleans was a perfect 2 hr.s on a freezing Sunday in Doylestown.
