And the award for the most self-absorbed, pretentiontious film of the year:

First place tie between The Tree of Life and Melancholia.

    * Unfortunately, as of this writing, I have not seen the following films, any of which may replace some entries on my list above: Alber Nobbs; Hugo; Rampart; Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy; War Horse; Young Adult.

  5. Needless to say, I haven’t viewed every good or great English-language movie released in 2011. But of those I’ve seen, here are my “10 best.” They’re listed in alphabetical order, because of genre issues . . .
    1. The Conspirator
    2. Drive
    3. Everything Must Go
    4. The Guard
    5. Kill the Irishman
    6. The King’s Speech
    7. Melancholia

And in the foreign-language category, my hands-down winner would be:
    1. Le Havre

  6. King’s Speech
Midnight in Paris, the Help, Ides of March, Descendents,
The Artist, My Week with Marilyn, Iron Lady, The Guard, J. Edgar

    Moneyball
    Melancholia
    Hanna
    Attack the Block
    The Descendants
Rise of the Planet of the Apes
    Midnight in Paris
(Special mention goes to Summer Wars, which is technically a 2009 movie, but only got around to playing in Philly in 2011. It would be my #4 movie of the year.)

    Bottom 10-ish:

    Transformers 3/Pirates 4 — It’s a tie! A terrible, nauseating tie!
    Our Idiot Brother
    Your Highness
    Green Lantern
    Cowboys and Aliens
    Priest
    Sherlock Holmes 2
